Problems solved by technology

In many cases, external programmers are relatively complex because of the need to provide specific and critical functionality in order to interface with the IMD and the user
This results in specific, complex and relatively expensive external programmers often developed individually for different IMDs, consuming time and resources and increasing the overall cost of medical treatment
[0005] General-purpose computers, despite having the processing power to perform many of the functions of external programmers, are problematic for medical device applications because medical device manufacturers lack control over the computers

[0022] figure 1 is a schematic illustration of an Implantable Medical Device (IMD) system. The IMD system includes an IMD 10 already implanted in a patient P (in figure 1 shown as a pacemaker). One or more leads (generally designated by reference numeral 12 ) are electrically coupled to IMD 10 in a conventional manner. exist figure 1 In the example of IMD 10, which is a pacemaker, leads 12 extend via veins into the patient's heart. Other arrangements and configurations of leads 12 are known in the art for other types of IMDs.

[0023] figure 1 Also shown is external programming unit 20 , which communicates non-intrusively with IMD 10 via telemetry channel 22 . Telemetry head 24 is associated with programming unit 20 to perform two-way communication between IMD 10 and programming unit 20 . Telemetry head 24 may be positioned on the patient's body over the implant site of IMD 10, or may communicate with IMD 10 via remote telemetry such that one or more antennas inside the...

Abstract

A telemetry module connects to a computing device in order to perform functions related to programming and interaction with an implantable medical device (IMD). The telemetry module manages communication between the computing device and the IMD, and ensures that instructions provided by the computing device for programming the IMD are valid and safe before those instructions are executed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to systems and devices for interrogating and programming implantable medical devices (IMDs). Background technique [0002] IMDs used to produce therapeutic results in patients are well known and include implantable cardiac pacemakers, cardioverters, defibrillators, drug injection pumps, neurostimulators, and other devices. Many of these devices provide an electrical output or contain circuitry to perform their intended function. [0003] An external device (typically a programmer) is typically used to interface with the IMD using telemetry. This external device can be used for many tasks associated with IMDs. Examples of these tasks include obtaining information about the situation, state, or condition of the IMD, obtaining information about the patient (such as information related to desired therapy to be provided by the IMD), transmitting information to the IMD to specify parameters of therapy to be provided by the IMD...
