Embodiment Construction

[0018] 1. Parallel enteral and IV therapy

[0019] Referring now to the accompanying drawings, figure 1 One embodiment of an enteral administration unit or assembly 8 positioned adjacent to an intravenous administration set, intravenous supply line assembly, or intravenous assembly 6 is shown. In this exemplary embodiment, patient 10 is supplied with an enteral solution and an intravenous solution. However, it should be understood that the patient may be supplied with the enteral solution at the same or a different time than the IV solution. From time to time, a healthcare provider may disconnect the IV fluid supply or enteral fluid supply to introduce a new delivery bag or medication syringe. Use of the enteral set 8 alongside the IV set 6 enables the healthcare provider to administer intravenously at certain times or times of day while delivering the dosing formula enterally at certain times or times of the day. Enteral solutions may include liquid food, drugs, nutritiona...

Abstract

An enteral medical treatment assembly having an enteral supply tube and an enteral access device. The distal end of the enteral supply tube has a mating obstructer configured to obstruct mating of the enteral supply tube with an intravascular patient access port. The proximal end of the enteral patient access device includes a mating obstructer configured to obstruct mating of the enteral patient access device with a connector of an intravascular supply tube. This enteral medical treatment assembly provides a safeguard against erroneous connections between enteral and intravascular treatment systems.

Description

Background technique [0001] Enteral nutrition involves a form of high nutrition and metabolic support in which nutritional formulas or drugs are delivered into the gastrointestinal tract, stomach or duodenum. Nutrient delivery can be achieved through the use of an enteral delivery system, assembly or device. Enteral delivery systems often deliver nutrients to the gastrointestinal tract using a catheter inserted through the patient's nose or mouth. [0002] Other types of catheters are inserted into a patient's veins or arteries for endovascular therapy, which involves treatment of the circulatory or cardiovascular system by accessing any blood vessel. These catheters include intravenous (IV) catheters, which can be inserted into a vein, and intraarterial catheters, which can be inserted into an artery. IV catheters include central venous catheters, peripheral venous catheters, and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), among others. These catheters comprise relati...
