Figure 1-3 A large turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine 1 of the crosshead type is shown with its intake system and exhaust system. Engine 1 has a scavenging tank 2 and an exhaust tank 3 . Each of these boxes runs the entire length of the engine. The engine has a number (usually between 5 and 14) of cylinders arranged in-line. The exhaust valve connected to the combustion chamber is indicated by 4 . The engine 1 can be used, for example, as the main engine in an ocean-going vessel or as a stationary engine in a power station for running a generator. The overall output of the engine may range, for example, from 5,000 to 110,000 kW.
