Abstract

A biometric authentication device that is thin and realizes authentication of a high security level. The biometric authentication device (1) has a light source (10), a light guide section (11A), a diffraction section (11B), a microlens array (12), an imaging element (13), an image processing section (14), a pattern holding section (15), an authentication section (16), a voltage supply section (17), a light source drive section (181), an imaging element drive section (182), and a control section (19). When light (L0) emitted from the light source (10) enters the diffraction section (11B) afterpropagating in the light guide section (11A) by total reflection, light (L1) diffracted to an angle different from the angle of the entry is produced. As a result, the light guide section (11A) functions as a surface area light source, and conditions for the total reflection in the light guide section (11A) become not satisfied. This causes the light (L1) to be guided to the outside of the light guide section (11A), which results in the inside of a living body (2) being sufficiently irradiated with light.
