Problems solved by technology

[0005] Unfortunately, electronic ballasts today work with coaxial dimmer switches or dedicated dimmer switches, but not with both
This results in additional complexity and cost in the design and installation of electronic ballast lighting systems
Suppliers of electronic ballasts must stock electronic ballasts used with both coaxial and dedicated dimmer switches to meet customer demand, increasing inventory costs

Embodiment Construction

[0017] figure 1 is a block diagram of a lighting system with a universal dimming electronic ballast made in accordance with the present invention. Electronic ballasts can be used with coaxial dimmers or dedicated dimmers (eg 0-10V dimmers, PWM dimmers or DALI dimmers) that provide phase cut power from mains power. Coaxial dimmers can be used with dedicated dimmers, where the coaxial dimmer is used as the primary dimmer and the dedicated dimmer is used as the secondary dimmer. When using a coaxial dimmer, the electronic ballast is suitable for any ballast input power provided by the coaxial dimmer to produce the desired dimming of the lamp because the waveform of the lamp power is not affected by the line voltage. The line voltage detector detects the line voltage and adjusts the capacitance of the boost circuit through the capacitor selection circuit to maintain the stability of the electronic ballast. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that ballast input power may be ...

Abstract

A universal line voltage dimming method and system, with a control circuit for an electronic ballast operable to receive ballast input power and an outboard dedicated dimming signal including a power sensing circuit (27) generating a sensed power signal (52) in response to the ballast input power (20); an on-time converter (50) generating an on-time signal (54) in response to the sensed power signal (52); a dedicated dimming interface (122) operable to generate a dedicated dimming signal (124) in response to the outboard dedicated dimming signal (120); and a microprocessor (56) operable to generate a dimming control signal (58) in response to at least one of the on-time signal (54) and the dedicated dimming signal (120). The on-time signal (54) determines the dimming control signal (58) when mains power is phase cut power.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to lamp dimming control, and more particularly to methods and systems for dimming lamps utilizing a general purpose dimming system. Background technique [0002] Electronic ballasts for fluorescent lamps have become well established and are widely used in a variety of applications. One application that has been problematic is dimmable electronic ballasts. Two different dimming methods have been implemented: using a dimming switch in line with the main power to provide phase control of the main power to the electronic ballast, or using a dedicated dimming switch. A light switch is used to provide a dedicated dimming signal to the lamp to control power switching. [0003] An in-line dimmer switch (e.g., a triac dimmer) utilizes a reduced on-time (i.e., the time during which the chopper ballast input power is non-zero) to generate Ballast input power. Mains power briefly passes through zero power between positiv...
