Embodiment Construction

[0090] figure 1 Shows a block diagram of part of a listening system comprising a listening device according to an embodiment of the invention, including a signal path from a microphone to a receiver (speaker). Listening devices, such as hearing aids, consist of a set of directional microphones that pick up sounds from the environment and convert them into analog electrical signals that are fed to corresponding analog-to-digital converters (A / D). A / D converter sampling frequency F s1 (chosen here as) 10kHz. The digitized output signal from the A / D converter has a bandwidth of 5kHz (Δf LF ), which is fed to a digital signal processor (DSP), where it is processed to perform one or more of normal DSP functions such as directional information extraction, providing appropriate gain contouring, compression, feedback cancellation, noise reduction, etc., and providing Signal after processing. Signal processing is usually performed independently in multiple subbands. The processed...

Abstract

The invention relates to a method of processing an audio signal in a portable listening device, the audio signal comprising a low frequency part having an LF-bandwidth f LF and a high-frequency part having a HF-bandwidth deltaf HF . The invention further relates to a listening device and to a listening system. The object of the present invention is to improve performance or save power in a portable listening device. The problem is solved in that the method comprises a) providing an audio input signal consisting of said low frequency part having an LF-bandwidth deltaf LF ; b) performing at least one signal processing step on the low frequency part of the audio signal; and c) performing a bandwidth extension process on said low frequency part of the audio signal to generate said high-frequency part of the audio signal, thereby generating or regenerating said audio output signal with a full bandwidth deltaf full comprising said LF-bandwidth f bF and said HF-bandwidth deltaf HF. An advantage of this is that power consumption is reduced. The invention may e.g. be used for portable communication device, mobile telephones or listening devices, such as a hearing aids, ear protection devices, headsets, head phones, etc.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to audio processing in portable devices with an eye toward keeping power consumption relatively low. In particular the invention relates to a method of processing an audio signal in a portable listening device, the audio signal comprising LF The low frequency part and has a HF bandwidth Δf HF the high frequency part. [0002] The invention also relates to a portable listening device, a listening system and a method of operating a listening device. [0003] For example, the invention may be used in applications such as portable communication devices, mobile phones or listening devices, such as hearing aids, ear protection devices, headphones, headsets and the like. Background technique [0004] The frequency resolution of the human auditory system is much lower at high frequencies than at low frequencies due to the logarithmic nature of human frequency resolution. This fact combined with the fact that most audio signals...
