Problems solved by technology

Most consumers pay for Short Message Service (SMS) on a per-message basis, and given the amount of data passed between the STB and the call processing system, the cost of transmitting data via the SMS system is prohibitive
Many features such as pay-per-view movies are not available to a large percentage of subscribers due to the possible lack of a back channel for set-top boxes

Embodiment Construction

[0028] Various embodiments described herein generally provide apparatus, systems, and methods that facilitate the transmission of data between a client device and a remote device over a wireless telephone network. More specifically, data from the client device is modulated into an audio signal and transmitted to the wireless phone. The wireless telephone receives the audio signal and places a telephone call to a remote device over a wireless telephone network. During the telephone call, the wireless telephone transmits the audio signal to the remote device across a voice channel of the wireless telephone network. The remote device receives and decodes the audio signal to extract the transmitted data. In some embodiments, the client device and the remote device can transmit data bi-directionally. Briefly stated, various embodiments described herein provide systems, methods, and apparatus for exchanging data between a client device and a remote device over a voice channel of a...

Abstract

Various embodiments described herein generally provide apparatus, systems, and methods that facilitate the transmission of data between a client device (102) and a remote device (108) over a wireless telephone network (106). More particularly, data from the client device is modulated into an audio signal (604) and transmitted to the wireless phone (104). The wireless telephone (104) receives the audio signal and places a telephone call to a remote device (108) via a wireless telephone network (106). During the telephone call, the wireless telephone (102) transmits the audio signal to the remote device (108) across a voice channel of the wireless telephone network (706). The remote device (108) receives and decodes the audio signal to extract the transmitted data.

Description

technical field [0001] This application relates to data transmission in wireless networks. Background technique [0002] In pay television distribution systems such as direct satellite broadcast systems, television receivers (also known as set-top boxes) are usually required to exchange data with a central data collection system. For example, central data collection systems typically collect pay-per-view subscription information, health and diagnostic information, and the like. Typically, the set-top box contains a modem that communicates with the call-processing system over the analog telephone line in the residence. The set top box periodically dials the call processing system and exchanges data over the analog telephone line. However, an ever-increasing number of users no longer have wirelines at their homes, and therefore the inability of the set-top box to communicate with the call processing system is a problem. [0003] It has been proposed to use wireless data cha...
