[0004] A disadvantage of this type of control method is that the tables have to be obtained by several test calibrations with the aid of different ambient air temperatures and different ambient air pressures, which requires high effort and thus high costs

Embodiment Construction

[0042] Such as figure 1As shown, internal combustion engine 10 includes a turbocharger 12 . Turbocharger 12 includes a turbine 14 that drives a compressor 16 via a shaft 18 . Via intake passage 20 , ambient air is compressed by compressor 16 and channeled to engine 22 . Exhaust gases from engine 22 may be channeled through turbine 14 via exhaust passage 24 . A portion of the exhaust gases bypasses the turbine 14 via a bypass device 26 . Bypass device 26 is opened and closed by wastegate 28 which is operated by wastegate actuator 30 . The wastegate actuator 30 is spring-loaded in the closing direction of the wastegate 28 by means of a spring 32 . In order to open wastegate 28 , the spring force of spring 32 must be overcome. Pressure is applied to wastegate actuator 30 via boost line 34 . The boost line 34 is under pressure from the intake passage 20 via a boost valve 36 . Booster valve 36 is the control element for operating wastegate 28 . To control turbocharger 12 , ...

Abstract

A method for operating a turbo charger (12) for a combustion engine (10) comprises (a) providing a set (48) of values of a basic boost pressure (44) (which is the minimum pressure required for opening a turbine waste gate 28) at a standard temperature T0 and at a standard pressure p0; (b) measuring ambient air temperature T; (c) measuring ambient air pressure p; (d) calculating the density [rho] of ambient air based on the measured ambient air temperature T and ambient air pressure p; (e) transforming at least one point of the provided set (48) of values of the basic boost pressure (14) at standard conditions into at least one point of an estimated set (42) of values of the basic boost pressure at ambient conditions by a correction factor based on the calculated density [rho]; and (f) using the at least one corrected value (42) of the basic boost pressure for controlling the turbocharger (12). The mathematical determination of the basic boost pressure (44) correction tables obviates the use of time-consuming calibrations. The turbo charger (12) is controlled according to the basic boost pressure (44) which is received in a high precision and a simple way.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method for operating a turbocharger of a vehicle internal combustion engine and a controller for controlling this type of turbocharger. Background technique [0002] A turbocharger includes a turbine connected to a compressor. Through the compressor, ambient air is drawn in, compressed to a higher pressure and supplied to the engine. Exhaust gases from the engine are directed to a turbine where they are expanded to drive a compressor. In order to control the pressure of the ambient air drawn in, a bypass device for bypassing the turbine is provided so that the turbine can be operated with a reduced exhaust gas flow. The bypass is opened and closed via a so-called waste gate. The wastegate may be actuated by duty cycle pressure, such as ambient air pressure after a compressor. The wastegate is spring loaded in the closing direction. Due to the spring force, a very small boost pressure is required to open the wastegate, wh...
