Embodiment Construction

[0068] Now refer to figure 1 , figure 1 A side view of a hydrophobic vent assembly 10 for use in a transmission is shown in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. The vent 10 has a vent stem 12 with a first end 14 connectable to an aperture 16 located in a cavity 18 within the transmission case 20 . The first end 14 of the vent rod 12 may be press fit into the bore 16 , screwed, or similarly attached to the wall 19 of the housing 20 . The vents 10 function to allow air to exit or enter the chamber 18 to equalize the pressure in the housing 20 and prevent water from entering the chamber. The second end 22 of the vent 10 is covered by a vent cover or snap cover 24 . Preferably, cover 24 is a protective metal snap cover. The vent rod 12 also includes an annular base 23 located near the first end 14 . In one embodiment, the outer surface 25 of the base 23 abuts the wall 19 of the housing 20 , thereby sealing the stem 12 against the housing 20 .

Abstract

A vent assembly attachable to a transmission case including: a rod, a diaphragm, and a cover. The rod has an annular flange, a first end, a second end, and a throughbore extending between the first end and the second end. The first end is connectable to the transmission housing and the second end has an annular periphery and at least one flange. The diaphragm is located at the second end of the rod above the through hole. The cover has a base and an annular wall extending from the base. The annular wall of the cap is deformed at the terminal end to abut the annular flange at a plurality of discrete locations, wherein the undeformed portion of the annular wall of the cap forms at least one channel extending axially along the rod. At least one channel forms a path between the cover and the flange of the stem.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 240,603, filed September 8, 2009, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to a vent assembly for a transmission, and more particularly to an assembly for venting an enclosed chamber or case of a transmission. Background technique [0004] The statements in this section merely provide background information related to the present disclosure and may or may not constitute prior art. [0005] For example, integrating a transmission power inverter module (TPIM) into a transmission requires the construction of a completely dry chamber. Also, since temperature differences cause pressure fluctuations in the transmission case, the chamber must be ventilated. However, the presence of water in liquid or vapor state in the chamber would not be suitable for the function and opera...
