The invention relates to a method and system for programming and checking EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) of a display device, wherein the method comprises the following steps: connecting a programming checking instrument with the display device and a sound image playing device via first and second I2C (Inter-integrated Circuit) buses, wherein the sound image playing device is used for executing image sound to the display device through an HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface); programming and checking the EDID of a television by a controller of the programming checking instrument through the first I2C bus, and enabling the first I2C bus to be idle after successfully programming and checking the EDID; and controlling the first I2C bus to communicate with the second I2C bus by the controller of the programming checking instrument so as to read the EDID of the display device by the second I2C bus before executing image sound by the sound image playing device.
