Embodiment Construction

[0049] Referring to the drawings, in which like parts are designated by like numerals throughout, figure 1 and 2 Shown is a stamping machine 10 arranged to form a blank 12 into a desired shape. The stamping machine 10 includes an upper forming die 14 , a lower forming die 16 and a punch 18 . To produce the desired shape of the slab 12 , the slab is positioned between forming dies 14 , 16 and pressed by a punch 18 , as known to those skilled in the art. As envisioned, the slab 12 used may be any deformable substrate, such as metal or plastic. The intended forming operation may involve draw-in, pure drawing, or a combination of both, as will be understood by those skilled in the art.

[0050] The upper mold 14 and the lower mold 16 each include a hollowed-out central portion 14A, 16A, respectively. The hollowed-out central portions 14A, 16A may have a generally circular cross-section or any other shape that yields the desired shape to the slab 12 during the stamping operatio...

Abstract

The present invention relates to fluid-assisted non-isothermal stamping of slabs and provides a method of stamping a slab into a desired shape, the method comprising providing a slab. The method also includes locally cooling the slab with the fluid flow in predetermined regions that are to experience high stress concentrations during forming the slab into the desired shape. Additionally, the method includes forming the sheet metal blank into a desired shape in a stamping press having punches. A system using the method of forming a slab is also disclosed.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 309,573, filed March 2, 2010, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to fluid assisted non-isothermal slab stamping. Background technique [0004] Stamping generally includes various sheet forming production processes such as punching, blanking, embossing, bending, flanging, and embossing using machines or presses. The stamping process can form simple or complex shapes with high productivity. Various substrates such as metal or plastic can be used in this process. [0005] Stamping the blank into the desired shape can occur in a single-stage operation, or can be done in multiple stages, where each stroke of the punching machine forms the desired finished shape from the blank. Frequently, the finished shape produced by stamping operations, as well as production...
