Engine 10 is selectable to operate in a number of combustion modes, including a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion mode and a homogeneous ignition combustion mode (SI). Engine 10 can alternatively be operated at a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio and a substantially lean stoichiometric air-fuel ratio. The invention is applicable to different internal combustion engine systems and combustion cycles.
