According to various embodiments of the present invention, a light-based touch screen includes one or more infrared or near-infrared light emitting diodes (LEDs) and a plurality of photodiodes (PDs) arranged along a perimeter around the touch screen or touch surface. The LEDs project light substantially parallel to the screen surface and this light is detected by the PD. A pointer such as a finger or a stylus placed over a part of the screen blocks some of the light beams and accordingly some PDs monitor lower light intensities. The geometry of the PD positions and the light intensity they detect are sufficient to determine the screen coordinates of the pointer.
