Embodiment Construction

[0029] according to figure 1 The CO sensor is based on p-silicon-substrate1. In this case, the CO sensor has two similarly constructed field-effect structures arranged side by side. Here, field-effect structures are usually more figure 1 are further apart from each other as shown in the dimensions. In addition to being produced on a base body, the sensor can of course also be produced on a separate base body and be arranged adjacently on an external carrier, for example a building floor or a printed circuit board.

[0030] Field effect structures are constructed identically. The field-effect structure each has a source region 3 and a drain region 4 in the n-Si region 2 . Furthermore, a floating gate 5 is provided in a passivation layer 6 made of SiO2. The floating gate 5 is covered by a passivation layer 6 , wherein a thinned region is arranged directly above the floating gate 5 . Corresponding sensitive layers 7 , 8 are provided on the thinned regions. In this case, th...

Abstract

The invention relates to a FET-based detector for carbon monoxide that is based on two sensitive layers (7, 8). The first of said sensitive layers (8) is catalytically active and thus react equally to alcohols, particularly ethanol, and carbon monoxide. The second of said sensitive layers (7) is not catalytically active and thus does not react to carbon monoxide, rather only to ethanol. From the comparison of the signals of both layers, the concentration of carbon monoxide can be determined. The two sensitive layers are implemented via similar metal oxide layers, wherein there is an additional layer having a catalyst such as palladium for the catalytically active layer. Alternatively, two different layers can be used, one of which is already catalytically active without an additional layer.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a carbon monoxide selective detector, preferably for indoor applications, and to a method for operating such a detector. Background technique [0002] Detecting CO (carbon monoxide) in the air is of great value for a range of applications in buildings. On the one hand, CO is odorless, but at the same time highly toxic. The current MAK-value (maximum working space concentration) for CO is therefore only 30 ppm. Now, if there is a combustion device or a chimney in the room, the carbon monoxide concentration in the flue gas may be several percent by volume in case of incomplete combustion, ie lack of air. If the chimney is not sealed or if the chimney exhaust air leaks into the room due to unfavorable pressure conditions, for example due to an unfavorably extended chimney or a range hood operating nearby, poisonous CO concentrations can form. In the worst case, this is sufficient to cause damage to health or even death due to p...
