Abstract

An embodiment of the invention relates to an impedance matching element arranged between a first medium and a second medium. The impedance matching element is formed by stacking a plurality of metamaterial sheet layers along a direction perpendicular to the surfaces of the sheet layers. Each of the metamaterial sheet layers comprises a substrate and a plurality of artificial microstructures attached on the substrate. The substrate is divided into a plurality of lattices. The artificial microstructures are arranged in the lattices. Each of the lattices and the artificial microstructure in the lattice form a unit lattice. The impedance of the unit lattice of the impedance matching element is continuously changed along a sheet layer stacking direction. The impedance of each of the unit lattices forming a head sheet layer and a tail sheet layer is the same as the impedance of the corresponding position of the first medium or the second medium in contact with the head sheet layer and the tail sheet layer, respectively.
