[0100] In summary, this description introduces a fiber optic sensor capable of simultaneously detecting and measuring multiple physical standards at one or more predetermined locations (also referred to as specific locations) on an optical fiber, and a fiber optic sensor made of such method.

[0101] FBG has the function of adjusting the refractive index along the fiber core within the period L, which has been widely used in the detection of physical parameters and filtering. FBG sensors can be used to measure strength, stress, strain, pressure, and temperature. These functions are based on the optical sensitivity of FBG to strain and temperature. Compared with traditional electronic and electromagnetic devices, FBG has considerable advantages, mainly in light weight, small size, long service life, long-range linearity, and resistance to external electromagnetic corrosion.

[0102] SFBG is a kind of FBG whose refractive index is not adjusted uniformly but varies periodically ...

Abstract

A superstructure fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) by laser-assisted direct writing of on-fiber metallic films. A laser direct write method is used to fabricate periodic films of silver nanoparticles on the non-planar surface of as-fabricated FBGs. Silver films with a thickness of about 9 [mu]m are fabricated around a Bragg grating optical fiber. The performance of the superstructure FBG is studied by applying temperature and tensile stress on the fiber. An opto-mechanical model is also developed to predict the optical response of the synthesized superstructure FBG under thermal and structural loadings. The reflectivity of sidebands in the reflection spectrum can be tuned up to 20% and 37% under thermal and structural loadings, respectively. In addition, the developed superstructure FBG is used for simultaneous measurement of multiple criteria such as force and temperature to eliminate the inherent limitation of regular FBGs in multi- parameter sensing.

Description

[0001] Corresponding information about the application [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 213,796, filed July 16, 2009, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] This note provides an overview of a fiber optic sensor and its manufacturing process. More specifically, the present description relates to a fiber optic sensor capable of simultaneously detecting and measuring multiple standards at one or more predetermined locations on the fiber using the same data source, and to a method of making the fiber optic sensor. Background technique [0004] Fiber optic sensors, in particular fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), are known in the art. FBG is a type of optical fiber whose spectral response is affected by actual strain and temperature. Therefore, existing FBGs can be used to measure changes in stress or temperature. These unique features of fiber optic sensors such as FBGs facilitate ...
