Embodiment Construction

[0043] Embodiments of the present invention provide for data path transfer between parallel operating frequency bands of a multi-band communication device. figure 1 A functional block diagram of an example embodiment of a multi-band wireless device (STA) 100A and 100B is shown. The multiband wireless devices (STAs) 100A and 100B may each be a fixed (ie, fixed location) device or a mobile communication device, a PDA, a cell phone, a laptop or palmtop computer, and so on. Multiband wireless devices (STA) 100A and 100B include a control module 220 that includes a central processing unit (CPU) 260, random access memory (RAM) 262, read only memory (ROM) 264, and communication with device 100A. The interface circuit 266 connected with the battery and other power sources, key board, touch screen, display, loudspeaker, speaker, earphone, camera or other imaging equipment in 100B. RAM 262 and ROM 264 may be removable storage devices such as smart cards, SIMs, WIMs, semiconductor memor...

Abstract

Data path transfer is set up between concurrently operating frequency bands of multiband WLAN devices. The Fast Session Transfer (FST) is enhanced by introducing a new Information Element (IE) in the FST frames to enable negotiating the parameters to be established as a result of switching of a portion of the existing data / traffic streams to another frequency band. The new IE includes the number of streams being switched and for each stream being switched the stream ID. The new IE enables wireless transmitting and receiving devices to negotiate connection setup parameters associated with a requested transfer of the operating frequency band. Transmitting device sends an FST Setup Request frame with the new IE that includes the requested number of streams being switched and for each requested stream being switched the ID. Receiving device replies with an FST Setup Response frame accepting the parameters or with an alternate number of streams.

Description

technical field [0001] The field of the invention relates to wireless communications, and more particularly, to multi-band operation in wireless communications devices. Background technique [0002] Wireless communication over large geographic areas is provided by cellular telephone networks. These network technologies are often divided by generation, starting with the first generation (1G) of analog cellular telephones, which provided baseline voice communications in the late 1970s and early 1980s, to modern digital cellular telephones. Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is an example of a widely adopted 2G digital cellular network that communicates in the 900MHz / 1.8GHz frequency bands in Europe and 850MHz and 1.9GHz in the United States. The network provides for voice communication and additionally supports the transmission of text data via Short Messaging Service (SMS). SMS allows wireless communication devices (WCDs) to send and receive text messages of up t...
