Problems solved by technology

The inventors have recognized that the monitoring system of the present invention communicating wirelessly over networks operating on unprotected spectrum (e.g., those employing the IEEE's 802.11 standard) suffers from problems such as interference, dropped packets, competition with non-medical devices, roaming away line and other quality of service considerations that make it difficult or impossible to guarantee that notifications for each alarm condition will be delivered quickly and accurately

Abstract

The invention relates to a wireless monitoring system and a method with a dual mode alarming. A patient monitoring system and a method for reliably communicating alarm conditions detected by an acquisition device that receives physiological data from the patient are disclosed. The acquisition device includes a control unit(41) that detects alarm conditions based upon the physiological data received from the patient. A primary transmitter (42)and a secondary transmitter (43)are coupled to the control unit and are each capable of transmitting the alarm condition. The primary transmitter(42) is configured to connect to a wireless network (10) and communicate over a first frequency range. The secondary transmitter (43) is configured to transmit over a secondary wireless network using a second frequency range different from the first frequency range. When the primary transmitter (42) is not able to communicate with the primary wireless network, the control unit activates the secondary transmitter to transmit the alarm condition. The secondary transmitter (43) remains active until the primary transmitter reconnects with the primary wireless network.

Description

technical field Background technique [0001] Patient mobility is an integral part of many patient care protocols in high-severity care settings. As part of the rehabilitation process, patients are encouraged to stand regularly and walk short distances to windows, bathrooms, etc. Inadequate patient mobility can lead to physiological complications such as deep vein thrombosis, infection, and prolonged recovery. [0002] Continuous monitoring is preferably provided during these events of patient activity. Therefore, it would be preferable to allow continuous monitoring of the patient without being physically connected to a local / bedside monitor. Such continuous monitoring requires a reliable system for data transfer so that monitoring information is not lost or degraded. Also, if a patient has a problem, it is expected to know as quickly as possible. For example, alert notifications regarding a patient's condition should not be lost or delayed when the patient is moving, whi...
