Embodiment Construction

[0030] The present invention discloses mats or molded (eg, vacuum formed) preforms for use in exhaust gas treatment devices, such as catalytic converters and diesel particulate traps for automotive exhaust systems. The mat or preform may be used as a mounting mat to mount the frangible monolith within the housing of the exhaust treatment device, or as thermal insulation in the region of the end cone of the exhaust treatment device. A portion of the mat or preform has a greater basis weight than other portions of the mat or preform. The variation in basis weight of the mat or preform is believed to impart hot gas corrosion resistance during normal operation of the exhaust treatment device.

[0031] According to certain embodiments, the mat comprises at least one non-expanded inorganic fiber sheet. The sheet includes length, width and uncompressed thickness. The tablet comprises a first portion having a first uncompressed basis weight and at least one second portion having a s...

Abstract

The exhaust treatment device includes a housing; a frangible element disposed within the housing; and a mounting mat disposed between the frangible element and the housing for holding the frangible element in place, absorbing mechanical shock, and providing thermal insulation. The mounting mat includes a layer or sheet of inorganic fibers, a portion of the layer having a first basis weight and another portion having a second basis weight different from the first basis weight. Mats or vacuum-formed insulation preforms with variable basis weights in certain areas can be used as end cone insulation in exhaust gas treatment devices.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention discloses mats or molded pre-forms for use in exhaust gas treatment devices, such as catalytic converters and diesel particulate traps for automotive exhaust systems. The mat may be used as a mounting mat to mount a frangible monolith within the housing of an exhaust treatment device, or as thermal insulation in the end cone of an exhaust treatment device. Selected portions of the pad or end cone preform have a basis weight area that is greater than other areas of the pad or preform. Background of the invention [0002] Exhaust gas treatment devices are used on motor vehicles to reduce atmospheric pollution from engine emissions. Examples of widely used exhaust gas treatment devices include catalytic converters and diesel particulate traps. [0003] A catalytic converter for treating exhaust gas from a motor vehicle engine includes a housing; a frangible catalyst support structure for holding a catalyst for oxidation of carbon m...
