Embodiment Construction

[0035] In all figures, motion vectors are shown with the head of the arrow at the center of the block to which the vector corresponds, and for simplicity the object is considered to have the size of a point.

[0036] Example of typical camera movement

[0037] Figure 3 to Figure 6 Examples of various typical camera movements are shown, and the expected resulting apparent motion vectors are shown.

[0038] image 3 The camera is shown moving in a direction parallel to the Y-axis of the screen. For a camera pointed at point 301 and translated in the direction shown by vector 302 (ie down), the apparent motion of the object on the screen is upwards, as shown by vector 303 . A similar situation exists for translations along other vectors parallel to the screen plane.

[0039] Figure 4 The camera is shown moving in a direction perpendicular to the screen. The camera is pointed at point 401 and moves towards the scene. The apparent motion of objects in the scene is thus f...

Abstract

Methods and apparatus for motion estimation in a sequence of images are provided. One or more motion vectors representing movement of the camera or viewer position or orientation between each pair of fields or frames in the image sequence are determined. A set of candidate motion vectors for obtaining object positions in a field or frame from object positions in previous fields or frames is then determined. The set of candidate motion vectors is adjusted using motion vectors representing movement of the camera or viewer position, whereby a set of motion vectors for a sequence of images is obtained using the adjusted set of candidate motion vectors.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to motion estimation of an input image sequence, and more particularly to methods associated with candidate motion vectors generated based on camera / observer orientation and position. Background technique [0002] Motion estimation, the recognition of motion in a sequence of images, frames or video fields, is well known. Existing methods of motion estimation generally consider two or more frames in a sequence and create a set of motion vectors representing the 2D translational motion of an image region from one frame to the next. One possible technique for motion estimation is motion search, in which previous frames are searched to find the image region that best matches a particular region in the current frame. The positional difference of the two matching regions gives the motion vector for the current position. [0003] Different systems have different motion estimation needs. In compression systems such as video enc...
