Embodiment Construction

[0025] Preferred embodiments of the invention will be described in detail hereinafter, examples of which are presented in the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same reference numbers will be used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts.

[0026] The optical fiber production system and method produce optical fiber by using a reduced pressure furnace and a processing device. This article combines the attached Figure 1-12 Embodiments of optical fiber production systems and methods are described, like reference numerals indicating like or corresponding elements throughout the drawings. As used herein, the term "bare fiber" refers to a fiber that has been drawn directly from a heated glass source (also known as a preform) and that has not had a protective coating applied to its outer surface (for example, a polymer-based material) fiber optics. The optical fiber production systems and methods can utilize the efficient and effective fiber cooling a...

Abstract

The present invention provides optical fiber production systems and methods for producing optical fibers. The optical fiber is drawn from the preform in a furnace by passing the optical fiber through a processing apparatus under reduced pressure, said pressure being in the range of 0.01-0.8 atmospheres. The processing unit cools the bare fiber while the fiber is cooled to a temperature in the range of at least 1600-1300°C. A non-contact fiber centering device is located near the exit of the processing unit to center the fiber as it exits the processing unit.

Description

[0001] Related Application Cross Reference [0002] This application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) to U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 348,906, filed May 27, 2010. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to methods and apparatus for forming optical fibers, and more particularly to optical fiber production methods for forming and cooling optical fibers. Background technique [0004] Conventional manufacturing processes for producing optical fibers generally include drawing an optical fiber from an optical fiber preform in a drawing furnace, cooling the drawn optical fiber, and coating the optical fiber after the optical fiber has sufficiently cooled. Optical fiber is usually drawn in a furnace at about 2000°C, and in most cases heat is transferred to the preform by radiation, but the forced flow of shielding gas and the gas flow in the furnace due to natural convection can also affect the glass temperature . The relative contribu...
