Embodiment Construction

[0014] Among other things, the present inventors have recognized a method for measuring and controlling both the average and peak power output of an amplifier to a load. Measuring and controlling the average and peak power at the output of the amplifier limits the amount of potentially harmful peak or frequency power that can damage the load. For example, damaged audio speakers (such as those used in cell phones, personal digital assistants, laptop or tablet computers, personal media players) can severely distort the sound output, or completely limit the sound output from the transducer output capability.

[0015] In today's mobile electronic devices (eg, cell phones or other portable audio devices), there is an increasing need for stronger audio output for playing music and talking. Providing and playing a stronger audio output results in electrical stress on the smaller audio transducers (eg, smaller speakers) embedded in these devices. The added stress can exceed the phys...

Abstract

This document discusses, among other things, apparatus and methods for providing audio transducer protection. In an example, an audio protection circuit can include a first comparator configured to compare peak power information of a drive signal of an amplifier of an audio system with a first threshold, a limiter circuit configured to limit an input of the amplifier if the peak power information of the drive signal exceeds the first threshold, and a second comparator configured to compare average power information of the drive signal with a second threshold and to provide an output signal configured to modulate a gain of a pre-amplifier of the audio system using the comparison.

Description

technical field [0001] The subject matter of this application relates to audio systems, and more particularly, to speaker protection circuits for audio systems. Background technique [0002] Mobile electronic devices make it more and more convenient for users to contact the world and enjoy various forms of entertainment. As mobile electronic devices have matured, market pressure has been directed towards smaller, higher performance systems. As a result, the audio output transducers of mobile devices have become small and can provide robust sound quality. However, these components are vulnerable to damage under certain conditions that have become "normal" operating conditions. Contents of the invention [0003] This article discusses, among other things, devices and methods for providing protection for active audio transducers. [0004] In one example, an audio circuit may include: a first amplifier configured to receive an input audio signal and provide an amplified aud...
