Embodiment Construction

[0017] figure 1 Illustrated cotton harvester picking spindle 10. The illustrated cotton harvester spindle 10 includes a cylindrical bearing portion 15 concentric with the longitudinal axis 20 and supported in bushings (not shown) in the spindle bar. The gear 25 is located at the end of the bearing portion 15 . The gear 25 meshes with an accompanying gear (not shown) in the spindle bar to rotate the spindle 10 in the direction R about the axis 20 .

[0018] At location 30 , spindle 10 tapers toward rounded tip 35 to define tapered end 40 . Spindle 10 includes three sets of alternating grooves 45 and circular bands 50 equally spaced around the periphery of tapered end 40 . A flute 45 is located radially inside a circular rounded land 50 . A plurality of barbs or barbs 55 protrude above groove 45 . The barb 55 includes an upper surface or top 60 positioned along the surface of the tapered end 40 delineated by the continuation of the land 50 .

[0019] The barb 55 includes a...

Abstract

A cotton harvester spindle comprises a body, which can rotate about an axis in a direction of rotation. A tapered end has a tip and a plurality of barbs projecting in the direction of rotation. A flat gullet area extends between the adjacent barbs. The barbs having an axially outermost face angled toward the tip and an axially innermost sloping wall angled radially inwardly toward the flat gullet area. Wherein, the tapered end is covered with a coating selected from the group consisting of aluminum magnesium boride (AlMgB14), aluminum magnesium boride comprising a dopant X (AlMgB14:X), and diamond-like carbon.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to cotton harvesters, and more particularly, to coatings for cotton harvester spindles. Background technique [0002] To harvest cotton, cotton harvesters typically include multiple row units. Each row unit typically includes a vertical pick cylinder having a plurality of picker bars. The spindle bar rotatably mounts the spindle with barbs for picking cotton from the cotton plant. Spinning spindles are disclosed in commonly assigned US Patent No. 5,404,698, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. The spindles on which the cotton is wrapped pass under the rotating doffer discs, which unwind the cotton and free it from the spindles. [0003] Ingots are typically electroplated with engineered hard chrome greater than 45 microns. Engineered hard chrome is hard (900-1100HV) and corrosion resistant, which provides good wear resistance, enabling service life of about 500 to 1000 hours. Engineered hard chro...
