Abstract

A refrigerant compressor includes a housing providing a refrigerant outlet having a throat. An electric motor is disposed in the housing to directly drive the impeller about the axis via the shaft in response to a variable speed command. The impeller includes an outlet end aligned with a variable geometry diffuser. A magnetic bearing assembly rotatably supports the shaft relative to the housing in response to commands from the magnetic bearing. A member is arranged to adjust the throat area and to move in a direction generally parallel to the axis in response to the actuator receiving compressor adjustment commands. the controller is configured to provide a variable speed command to the motor, a magnetic bearing command to the magnetic bearing assembly, and a compressor adjustment command to the actuator to vary the throat area to obtain a desired compressor operating state, respectively, and Variable inlet geometry is not required.
