Embodiment Construction

[0018] In accordance with these principles, systems and methods for detecting deployment of surgical instruments during surgical procedures are disclosed. In one embodiment, the surgical instrument may include a biopsy needle. The surgical procedure can be integrated into an image-guided navigation system for tracking the biopsy location. These systems and methods track the number, time and location of biopsies using a navigation system. In one embodiment, the needle deployment location is automatically recorded during an image-guided biopsy procedure, for example, the firing time and needle location can be automatically recorded for biopsy gun shots during the biopsy procedure. Methods for needle deployment based on image, sound and motion detection are provided. The detection system can be incorporated as an additional feature into the image-guided biopsy navigation system.

Abstract

A system and method for medical device detection includes a guidance system (38) configured to deliver a surgical device (32) into a subject. A surgical device deployment detector (25, 40, 42, 44) is configured to cooperate with the guidance system and is configured to detect a deployment of the surgical device in the subject. A coordination module (22) is configured to receive input from the guidance system and the deployment detector to determine and record one or more of a location and time of each deployment.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to surgical procedure imaging, and more particularly to systems and methods for detecting surgical instruments during biopsy procedures. Background technique [0002] Prostate cancer is currently the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. In many cases, patients are diagnosed with prostate cancer using a "blind" transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided systematic biopsy. Ultrasound imaging, however, only guides the needle to different areas of the prostate and may not reliably visualize prostate cancer. Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has good sensitivity and specificity in detecting prostate cancer. Attempts have been made to create image-guided applications that can fuse real-time TRUS with pre-acquired MRI to guide the needle to diagnostic or therapeutic targets identified in the MRI. [0003] In MRI / TRUS fusion-guided targeted prostate biopsy and therapy, knowledge of the exact loca...
