For purposes of illustration, the electronically controlled throttle of an automobile will be the subject of this specification. It should be understood that the techniques described herein are applicable to other types of motor control circuits as well. The illustrated technique for estimating current is applied to improve reliability and analysis of a malfunctioning electronic throttle control (ETC) system by extending the utility of existing software and electric motor control hardware capabilities in a vehicle's engine control module (ECM). Abstract

The present invention relates to systems and methods for estimating current in motor control circuits for improved performance and diagnostics. An error condition detection circuit coupled to the motor control circuit reports an error condition when actual motor operation deviates from a predetermined desired motor operation. An overcurrent threshold comparator compares motor current to a threshold data value stored in a data storage register and sets an overcurrent flag when the motor current exceeds the threshold. a current interrogation processor monitors for a reported error condition and is programmed to read said overcurrent flag repeatedly and decrease said overcurrent threshold data value by a predetermined decrement amount until said overcurrent flag becomes set, while Respond to an error condition. The current interrogation processor is further programmed to report an overcurrent threshold data value present at the time the overcurrent flag became set as an estimate of current.
