For purposes of illustration, the electronically controlled throttle of an automobile will be the subject of this specification. It should be understood that the techniques described herein are applicable to other types of motor control circuits as well. The illustrated technique for estimating current is applied to improve reliability and analysis of a malfunctioning electronic throttle control (ETC) system by extending the utility of existing software and electric motor control hardware capabilities in a vehicle's engine control module (ECM). When applied as described herein, this technique provides a specific range of current flow through the electronic throttle motor control circuit.
