[0030] See eg figure 1The schematic diagram of the separator and friction plate of the wet clutch is shown, using cylindrical coordinates, and the transient conduction for two-dimensional heat transfer is expressed as

[0031] ∂ T ∂ t - k ρC [ 1 r ∂ ∂ r ( r ∂ T ∂ r ) + ∂ 2 T ∂ Z 2 ] = 0

[0032] According to empirical studies, the temperature inside the separator sheet can be c...

Abstract

A method (500) for determining clutch temperature. The method provides an accurate real-time clutch temperature that can be used to improve shift quality and protect against failure due to clutch overheating (510). A counter is incremented (506) every time the clutch exceeds a threshold temperature (504) to track cumulative high temperature conditions. Determining the clutch temperatures (502) includes taking account of heat generation, clutch cooling by transmission oil flow from a groove when the clutch is engaged, clutch cooling by open transmission oil flow when the clutch is disengaged, oil vaporization, and heat conduction.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims priority to provisional application 61 / 474,742, filed April 12, 2011, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a method and system for determining the real-time temperature of a wet clutch in an automatic transmission. Background technique [0004] Automatic transmissions have long used hydraulically applied clutches, for example, to effect ratio changes in a planetary gear train by synchronously opening and closing selector clutches attached to different elements of a planetary system. Clutch assemblies used in automatic transmissions typically include multiple separators, friction plates and other components. The friction plates consist of a mild steel chip with friction material bonded on each side, which is splined to the input shaft when the separator plate is drawn to the clutch housing and vice versa. The clutch housing can be conne...
