Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of reducing impact clunk in a hybrid electric vehicle. The hybrid transmission includes a transmission having a selectable clutch arrangement that, when engaged, is effective to mechanically couple the internal combustion engine to a first axle at a fixed ratio of engine speed to axle speed. The method for starting the engine includes performing an engine start event comprising cranking the engine and fueling the engine such that a ratio of engine speed to axle speed exceeds said fixed engine speed to axle speed ratio, and between engine speed and shaft speed The selectable clutch arrangement is engaged after the axle speed ratio exceeds the fixed engine speed to axle speed ratio.
