Embodiment Construction

[0013] figure 1 A conveyor embodying features of the invention is shown conveying layers of bulk product through a processing machine. The conveyor 10 comprises a conveyor belt 12 running / advancing along a conveying direction 14 . The belt supports a layer (or stack) 16 of bulk product (eg, vegetables) on an outer conveying surface 18 and conveys the layer along an upper carryway 20 through a processing station 22, such as a blanching lane. The product layer 16 is shown with a step change in the thickness of the layer at a location 24 along the length of the blancher. In this example, the product layer has a thinner thickness 26 downstream of the step location 24 and a thicker thickness 27 upstream. A product thickness sensor 28 near the inlet end 30 of the processing station 22 measures the thickness of the product mass, for example, by sensing the height of the product mass or the weight of the product mass. For height sensing, a photo-eye or other optical sensor, a proxi...

Abstract

A conveyor belt having a sensor probe extending upward from an outer conveying surface into a mat of bulk products conveyed on the belt. The probe senses a condition of the product mat at a predetermined depth. The probe height above the conveying surface may be fixed or may be adjustable to be positioned at a critical depth within the product mat.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to power driven conveyors, and more particularly to belt conveyors with sensors embedded in the conveyor belt. Background technique [0002] Conveyor belts are used to move bulk food products such as grains and pulses through processing equipment such as blanchers, cookers, coolers and freezers. The product rests in clumps on the outer conveying surface of the belt. It is often important that the processing apparatus process the mass of product in a manner that is uniform across the thickness of the mass of product or that all products undergo at least minimal processing. For example, a cooking process may require a minimum temperature anywhere in the mass of product. As the layer of product on the conveyor belt travels through the cooker, somewhere in the middle of the thickness of the layer the product is at a cold spot where the temperature finally reaches the lowest temperature level. One way to ensure that the p...
