Problems solved by technology

[0007] As mentioned above, GPS is another method used for self-check-in, but GPS suffers from localized blind spots, slow stabilization times and inaccurate readings
[0008] Third parties such as ShopKick(TM) provide audio solutions for self-check-in, but such solutions require expensive hardware facilities to filter out background sounds and have limited accuracy (spatial resolution)
Moreover, existing methods in the field are currently fraud-prone, too expensive, and / or too inaccurate to find any widespread use in the industry

Embodiment Construction

[0049] figure 1 is a schematic diagram of a method 100 for customer retail registration according to an exemplary embodiment. Method 100 (hereinafter "registration manager") is implemented as instructions written and resident on a non-transitory computer-readable (processor-readable) storage medium and executed by one or more processors. The processor is specially configured and programmed to handle the registration management procedure. The registration management program runs through the network. The network is a wired network, a wireless network, or a combination of a wired network and a wireless network.

[0050] In one embodiment, the registry management program is processed on a processor of a server in a cloud processing environment. In some cases, the check-in management process is processed at a point-of-sale (POS) terminal at a retail establishment (eg, a restaurant). The POS terminal may in some embodiments be a thin client that interacts with a remote server th...

Abstract

Techniques for checking into a retail establishment are provided. A retailer provides a substrate having a magnetic-field encoded tag. A consumer waves the consumer's device over the tag to electronically capture the magnetic-field encoded tag. The consumer's device is used to communicate the tag to a retailer to validate that the consumer is physically present and now checked into the retail establishment of the retailer.

Description

Background technique [0001] Automation for goods and services has reached record levels in today's society. From online banking and shopping to a multitude of devices and physical devices that include computing and networking capabilities, examples of what was a dream just a decade ago are now ubiquitous. These advances have occurred in large part because breakthroughs in electronics and wireless communications have allowed complex processing and network links. [0002] Additionally, many retail stores are now tailoring their services and promotions to these devices in order to engage, attract and retain customers in the retail store. [0003] Servers for many programs in retail outlets (restaurants, etc.), such as promotions, specials, and loyalty, rely on devices that know with certainty that a given customer is at a given location. Customers can "check in" with businesses via smartphones, but this often requires verification by an attendant or takes a long time when glob...
