An article inventory control system for articles, such as books, uses RFID tags attached to each article. Each tag has a unique identification or serial number for identifying the individual article. An inventory database tracks all of the tagged articles and maintains circulation status information for each article. Articles are checked out of the library using a patron self-checkout system. Checked out articles are returned to the library via patron self-check in devices. The shelves are periodically scanned with a mobile RFID scanner for updating inventory status.

A thermal management system and method to control temperature in an RFID reader is described herein. In particular, by inserting variable periods of inactivity (or latency) at the beginning or at the end of each read cycle, proportional to an instantaneous temperature value of the RFID reader, over-heating and damage of RFID reader electronics is prevented. The RFID reader includes a thermal sensor and determines when the high power RF electronics is enabled. If the RFID reader is in an over-heated condition, it can be turned OFF and during this period any requests received on an interface to the RFID reader to perform a read of tag(s) are not processed.

The present invention relates to a method for measuring a location of a radio frequency identification (RFID) reader by using beacons, and an RFID system for measuring a location of a moving RFID reader in an RFID system comprising: a plurality of beacon devices for emitting beacons; an RFID tag for transmitting pre-stored information by using radio frequency identification; and an RFID reader for calculating a current location using a plurality of at least three beacons wherein the RFID reader receives the plurality of beacons from the plurality of beacon devices while moving, and receiving the information from the RFID tag by using the radio frequency identification. According to the present invention, it is possible to increase the accuracy of the location measurement of a moving RFID reader in an RFID system because the location of the RFID reader is measured in consideration of propagation environments.

Provided are a mobile RFID reader and a control method thereof. The mobile RFID reader includes: a reader controller for beginning a reader operation to communicate with a tag in response to a command of a terminal controller of the wireless communication terminal; an anti-collision state machine for controlling collision among a plurality of tags, and transferring the result of communication with the tag to the reader controller; a reader transmitter for generating a reader command message decided at the anti-collision state machine, and coding and modulating the generated reader command message; a reader receiver for demodulating and decoding a tag signal received through an antenna, and reporting a tag response state to the anti-collision state machine; and a channel controller for selecting a channel to use to communicate with a tag in response to a command of the reader controller.

A system is provided for tracking a RFID tag within or outside of a cellular network. Upon receiving a request to track the RFID tag, the cellular network instructs each mobile host within the cellular network to track the RFID tag. When the RFID tag enters a coverage area of one of the mobile hosts, the ID of the RFID tag is communicated to the mobile host. Then, the mobile host obtains its location. At this point, if the mobile host is outside of the cellular network, the mobile host communicates with other mobile hosts within its coverage area such that all of the mobile hosts within its coverage area have the location and time stamp for the RFID tag. A battery or other energy storage device disposed on the mobile structure is charged with the generated energy. The RFID reader is powered with the energy storage device. A digital intercom based data management system and methods are provided. In at least one embodiment of the invention the system includes a digital intercom, a processor and a mobile RFID device. The system can be implemented within a healthcare facility and enables efficient and accurate management of data in a health care facility.

The performance of a radio frequency identification (RFID) system is improved by a protocol that eliminates collisions between signals generated by a) RFID tags that the RFID reader has already identified as being in its interrogation zone and b) RFID tags that are newly arrived and thus that the reader has not yet identified. This is illustratively accomplished by the use of separate identification and access frames. It is during the identification frame that newly arrived tags become identified by the reader. Although there may be collisions during the identification frame, those collisions are only among newly arrived tags. The already-identified tags communicate with the reader during respective time slots of the access frame, so that they neither collide with each other nor with the newly arrived tags.

The present invention is a mobile method and system for automatically monitoring the location and use of tools using radio-frequency identification (“RFID”) tags. An RFID tag is secured to each tool with a unique numerical identifier. The RFID tag transmits its unique numerical identifier associated with each of the RFID tags using a RF signal, wherein the RF signal is transmitted at different intervals for each of the RFID tags. A receiver on a mobile platform reads the RF signals and determines the unique numerical identifier being transmitted. An information processor interconnected with the receiver analyzes the unique numerical identifier from a predetermined index, and the information processor determines whether any tools were not found on the index and automatically alerts a user when a tool is missing.

Apparatus having corresponding methods and computer programs comprise: a mobile RFID reader adapted to receive radio-frequency (RF) signals from a plurality of RFID tags, wherein each RF signal represents a tag identifier associated with the respective RFID tag, and wherein the RFID tags include a plurality of asset tags and a plurality of location tags, wherein each of the asset tags is associated with a respective one of a plurality of assets, and wherein each of the location tags is associated with a respective one of a plurality of first locations; and an association module adapted to generate first associations between each of the assets and one or more of the first locations based on the tag identifiers.

Provided are a method and apparatus for sharing a portable terminal in a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and a mobile Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system. The portable terminal includes: a CDMA mobile station system for performing CDMA communication; a mobile RFID system for performing a passive RFID reader function; a switching unit for switching an antenna to any one between the CDMA mobile station system and the mobile RFID system; and a control unit for controlling the switching unit to connect the antenna to the CDMA mobile station system when the portable terminal transmits/receives a signal to/from the base station, or connect the antenna to the mobile RFID system when the portable terminal transmits/receives a signal to/from an RFID tag.
