Embodiments of the solid-state storage system provided herein are configured to perform improved mechanisms for testing of error recovery of solid state storage devices. In some embodiments, the system is configured to introduce or inject errors into data storage commands or operations performed in the non-volatile memory. Injected errors include corruption of data stored in the non-volatile memory, deliberate failure to execute storage operations, and errors injected into communication protocols used between various elements of the device. In some embodiments, injected errors can include direct errors that trigger an immediate execution of error recovery mechanisms and delayed errors that trigger execution of error recovery mechanisms at a later time. Error recovery mechanisms can be tested in an efficient, reliable, and deterministic manner to help ensure effective operation of storage devices. The integrity of non-volatile memory can also be tested.

Systems and methods for determining when to allow a temporary compromise on redundancy in a storage system. When servicing write requests, the storage system may utilize data redundancy techniques when writing data to backend storage devices. The operating conditions of the storage system are tracked and early acknowledgements for write requests may be permitted when the storage system is healthy enough. If the number of unacknowledged writes is greater than a programmable threshold, then early acknowledges may be prohibited. Also, if the number of ongoing rebuild processes is greater than a programmable threshold, then early acknowledges may be prohibited.

Systems and methods for implementing volume sets in a storage system. According to a first embodiment, a system may include a volume server, a first and a second client computer system, and a plurality of physical block devices. The volume server may be configured to aggregate storage in the plurality of physical block devices into a plurality of logical volumes, wherein a given logical volume includes storage from at least two physical block devices, to distribute a first subset including at least two of the plurality of logical volumes to the first client computer system for input/output as a first volume set configured to be accessed as a single logical device, and to distribute a second subset including at least two of the plurality of logical volumes to the second client computer system for input/output as a second volume set configured to be accessed as a single logical device.

In at least one embodiment, in response to introduction of a first storage node into a storage network including a plurality of storage nodes, the first storage node discovers at least one second storage node that is a peer storage node. The first storage node downloads one or more versions of one or more shared soft configurations from the second peer storage node. In response to selection of a first version of a first shared soft configuration for activation, the first storage node subscribes to the first shared soft configuration and activates the first version of the selected shared soft configuration on the first storage node. Thereafter, in response to an update of the first shared soft configuration to a second version on the first storage node, the first storage node propagates the second version of the first shared soft configuration to the second storage node.

Described herein are techniques for storing data in a redundant manner on a plurality of storage units of a storage system. While all of the storage units are operating without failure, only error-correction blocks are stored on a first one of the storage units, while a combination of data blocks and error-correction blocks are stored on a second one of the storage units. Upon failure of the second storage unit, one or more data blocks and one or more error-correction blocks formerly stored on the second storage unit are reconstructed, and the one or more reconstructed data blocks and the one or more reconstructed error-correction blocks are stored on the first storage unit.

Embodiments of the invention include first storage mediums having first storage characteristics for making up a first pool of capacity of a first tier of storage, and second storage mediums having second storage characteristics for making up a second pool of capacity of a second tier of storage. Free capacity of the first and second pools is shared between the first and second tiers of storage. When the first pool has an amount of free capacity available over a reserved amount of free capacity reserved for first tier data, a first quantity of second tier data is moved from the second tier to the first tier. Embodiments of the invention are directed to providing detailed error reporting of data operations performed on a NVM storage device. In one embodiment, a controller interfaces with a NVM storage device including NVM storage coupled with a bridge. In one embodiment, the controller is provided physical, page-level access to the NVM via the bridge, and the bridge provides detailed error reporting of the data operations that the bridge performs on the NVM on behalf of the controller. For example, the bridge may provide page level reporting indicating which page(s) failed during a read operation. Detailed error reporting allows the controller to better understand the failures that occurred in a data access operation in the NVM. It also enables the controller to manage the flash media at the physical page/block level. In one embodiment, detailed error reporting also enables the return of discontinuous ranges of data with the error portions removed.

A method and system for retrieving data that is stored on a backup or secondary storage system located at a remote location to a local storage system. Restoring of backup data involves the transferring of a point-in-time copy of primary system data from a secondary storage system to the local system. The point-in-time copy is created on the secondary system using an asynchronous remote copy scheme. The point-in-time copy that is restored may be either an entire volume or portions thereof.

A data storage system configured to manage unreliable memory units is disclosed. In one embodiment, the data storage system maintains an unreliable memory unit list designating memory units in a non-volatile memory array as reliable or unreliable. The unreliable memory unit list facilitates management of unreliable memory at a granularity level finer than the granularity of a block of memory. The data storage system can add entries to the unreliable memory unit list as unreliable memory units are discovered. Further, the data storage system can continue to perform memory access operations directed to reliable memory units in blocks containing other memory units determined to be unreliable. As a result, the operational life of the data storage system is extended.

A system and method suitable for storing multiple product lines in an automated warehouse environment are disclosed. The storage system includes a frame containing a plurality of stacks of containers, a first handling device capable of lifting a plurality of containers from a stack in a single operation, and a second independently moveable handling device capable of lifting a single container and moving the container laterally. Embodiments of the present invention use disk-level and stripe-level data redundancy to provide error detection and error correction for stored data objects, obviating the need for certain costly, intermediate levels of error detection and error correction commonly employed in currently available fault-tolerant, redundancy-based data-storage systems.

A method and apparatus are provided for enhancing the performance of storage systems to allow recovery after all types of suspensions in remote copy operations. Data is synchronized after an interruption in transfer between a first storage volume of a primary storage system and a first storage volume of a secondary storage system which also includes a second storage volume. After the interruption is detected, at the primary storage system, a record is provided of the data written onto the first storage volume of the primary storage system, and at the secondary storage volume a record is provided of the data written onto the first storage volume of the secondary storage system. Then, at least a partial copy of the record of the data written onto the first storage volume of the primary storage system is written onto the second storage volume. Using the copy, the first storage volume of the secondary storage system is synchronized with the second storage volume of the secondary storage system.

The invention provides a hybrid storage system which comprises at least one solid-state hard disc SSD (solid state drive), at least one mechanical hard disc and a control module, wherein the control module is used for migrating hot spot data blocks in the mechanical hard disc into the SSD, and migrating the non-hot spot data blocks in the SSD into the mechanical hard disc, the hot spot data blocks are data blocks of which the visited frequency is higher than that of other data blocks, and the non hot spot data blocks are data blocks of which the visited frequency is lower than that of others. According to the hybrid storage system and the hot spot data block migration method, provided by the invention, the utilization ratio of the SSD and the performance of the hybrid storage system are effectively enhanced, and meanwhile, the cost of the hybrid storage system is lowered.

Described are techniques used in dynamically modifying RDF groups. A system call is issued by a host computer system to execute a remote system call on a first data storage system to create, remove, or modify an RDF group between the first data storage system and another data storage-system-that is remotely connected to the first data storage system in an RDF switched environment. As part of executing the remote system call, data is pushed from the first to the second data storage systems without having an established link between the data storage systems. Each data storage system performs processing to make the necessary modifications in all directors in accordance with the dynamic RDF group. A status indicating success or failure of the remote system call is returned to the host computer system.

Systems and methods that enable the optimal creation of a storage object within a virtual storage system are disclosed. In accordance with embodiments, an optimal location with the storage system is determined in response to receiving an indication that a storage object is to be created within the storage system. The system and method prioritize physical storage resources in which to create the storage object, prioritize components to be provided access to the created storage object, and prioritize the interface between the physical storage resources and the accessing component. The storage object is optimally created within the storage system based on the priorities and based, at least in part, on other created storage objects.

In one embodiment a backup restore test method includes performing a backup process; performing a test restore virtual environment creation process, the test restore virtual environment including a plurality of virtual machines; and performing a test of the backup on the test restore virtual environment. The backup process can include backing up information associated with an application; identifying prerequisites associated with running the application; and backing up information associated with the prerequisites. The test restore virtual environment creation process can include gathering information identifying the prerequisites associated with the application; creating the plurality of virtual machines, wherein the plurality of virtual machines includes virtual machines corresponding to physical machines the application and perquisites run on; and bringing up the plurality of virtual machines utilizing the information from the backup process.
