Abstract

The sheet metal part (12) comprises a base material layer (14) and one or more intermediate and coating material layers (16, 18) and a welding recess formed along an edge region (20) of the sheet metal part ( 30). At least a portion of the coating material layer and the intermediate material layer are removed at the weld recess such that certain constituents from these layers do not affect the integrity of the adjacent weld joint (22) when the weld joint is subsequently formed along the edge region .
