[0049] The present inventors have recognized and understood a method of combining known fabrication techniques to fabricate a low cost, high performance interconnect system that carries radio frequency signals. The system can be manufactured with one or more connector modules adapted to carry radio frequency signals. The radio frequency connector modules can be manufactured using techniques that are compatible with those used to manufacture high speed data connectors. However, RF connector modules can carry signals with RF frequencies with very high isolation. As a specific example, the connector modules described herein can provide greater than 90 dB isolation between radio frequency signal conductors at a frequency of 5 GHz.

Abstract

A radio frequency connector module and associated printed circuit board that provide high isolation and controlled impedance at radio frequency frequencies. The connector module can be manufactured using conventional manufacturing techniques such as stamping, injection molding, multi-molding, and interference fit between components to provide low cost. Connector modules constructed by these techniques can realize coplanar waveguide structures with conductive shields for isolation and lossy materials to enhance coplanar propagation modes. Printed circuit boards can similarly be fabricated using conventional fabrication techniques including drilling to form vias. Therefore, the interconnection system can be manufactured at low cost. These techniques can be applied to provide performance comparable to that provided by more expensive components, including forms of isolation between radio frequency signals.
