Background of the invention [0001] Ionic liquids are a class of salts containing cations and anions that exist as liquids at temperatures of 100° C. or lower and generally have a melting point below room temperature. While not wishing to be bound by theory, ionic liquids generally have much lower symmetry than conventional salts, and the charges of cations and anions are distributed over larger volumes of molecules by resonance in ionic liquids, it is thought that this Resonance contributes to its liquid state at much lower temperatures than conventional salts (eg NaCl, mp 801 °C). Ionic liquids generally consist of a heterocyclic-containing cation and a counter anion that is usually inorganic in nature.
