Problems solved by technology

[0018] In addition, the influence of liquid crystal compositions containing alkenyl compounds on poor display has been disclosed (see Patent Document 5). Generally speaking, if the content of alkenyl compounds decreases, the η of the liquid crystal composition increases, and high-speed response changes are realized. It is difficult to obtain, and it becomes difficult to balance poor inhibition and high-speed response
[0019] In this way, it is difficult to develop a negative Δε that has both high Δn and low η, and that exhibits no or suppressed display defects only by combining a compound that exhibits a negative value of Δε with liquid crystal compounds (C), (D), and (F). liquid crystal composition
[0020] In addition, in Patent Document 6, it is disclosed that the response speed of the vertical liquid crystal cell is improved by using a liquid crystal material having a large index represented by (Formula 1), but it cannot be said that it is sufficient.

Abstract

The present invention pertains to: a nematic liquid crystal composition that is useful as a liquid crystal display material and exhibits negative dielectric anisotropy (Δε); and a liquid crystal display element that uses the nematic liquid crystal composition. This liquid crystal composition has a viscosity (η) that is sufficiently small, a rotational viscosity (γ1) that is sufficiently small, an elastic constant (K33) that is large, and has a negative dielectric anisotropy (Δε) with a large absolute value, without reducing the refractive index anisotropy (Δn) and nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (Tni). Furthermore, the liquid crystal composition is capable of providing a liquid crystal display element that provides a high response speed and excellent display quality, and minimizes or eliminates display defects in vertical-alignment displays, and the like, in which the liquid crystal display element is used. The liquid crystal display element, which uses this liquid crystal composition, is useful for active matrix driven liquid crystal display elements, and can be used for liquid crystal display elements in vertical-alignment and polymer sustained vertical-alignment displays, and the like.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a nematic liquid crystal composition having a negative dielectric constant anisotropy (Δε) useful as a liquid crystal display material, and a liquid crystal display element using the same. Background technique [0002] Liquid crystal display devices are used in various household electrical appliances including clocks and calculators, measuring instruments, automotive panels, word processors, electronic notebooks, printers, computers, televisions, etc. Representative examples of liquid crystal display methods include TN (twisted nematic) type, STN (super twisted nematic) type, DS (dynamic light scattering) type, GH (guest-host) type, IPS (in-plane switching) type, and OCB type. (Optically Compensated Birefringence) type, ECB (Voltage Controlled Birefringence) type, VA (Vertical Alignment) type, CSH (Color Super Vertical) type or FLC (Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal) and the like. In addition, examples of the driving method...
