Problems solved by technology

Historically, there have been limitations on the evacuation of high-purity massecuites because as the crystal mass-to-mass content increased, the massecuite became excessively viscous and caused various mechanical problems: the massecuite could not be removed from the pan and Centrifuge cannot be properly and evenly loaded; crystallizer cannot handle viscous massecuite; and requires excessive sugar washout to achieve sugar target purity, allowing purity to increase through centrifugation, which negates the benefit of additional crystallization
Additionally, traditional crystallizers tend to have stagnant zones of massecuite causing material to build up in parts of the equipment

Embodiment 1

[0050] Manufacturing 1ft 3 Batch crystallizer, similar to the single stage crystallizer described above. Three thermocouple probes were mounted at different points within the vessel, at different radial distances from the axis of rotation, and on different sides of the vessel. These positions were chosen to give as much information as possible about the mixing in the container. The process material chosen is the final massecuite, which is the material with the highest viscosity encountered in the sugar industry.

[0051] Figure 8 The temperature profiles using four thermocouples are shown when additional hot massecuite is added to the already cooled massecuite.

[0052] During the cooling and heating process of the selected process material, monitor the temperature at different points of the vessel over time and record the probe output and as Figure 9 As shown in the drawing. Figure 9 showed no appreciable difference between the thermocouple readings (it should be note...

Embodiment 2

[0056] The evacuation of massecuites with different degrees of purity is carried out in batch operation in two crystallizers made according to the single-stage crystallizers described above, in sizes up to 1 ft 3 and 12ft 3 . Known quantities of massecuite are removed from the pots during the downtime and placed in the respective crystallizers. For massecuite of high purity, remove the excess amount of crystals achieved when cooling and emptying the mass; add a small portion of the undiluted mother liquor. The massecuite is preheated to shutdown temperature and then cooled down according to the prescribed temperature profile. An undiluted sample of the mother liquor was obtained by withdrawing a small amount from the crystallizer and passing the mother liquor through a C-centrifuge mesh, followed by analysis of massecuite and suction filter. The results for different types of massecuite are shown below.

[0057] Result: Grinding High Purity Massecuite (1ft 3 crystallizer)...

Abstract

Apparatuses and methods are provided for crystallization. An apparatus includes a vessel defining an interior, a draft tube positioned in the interior of the vessel and defining an annular space between the draft tube and a side wall of the vessel, a rotor shaft extending along a central axis of the vessel, and a helical screw attached to and configured to rotate with the rotor shaft. A multi-stage apparatus further includes a stage barrier wall separating the vessel into two stages, with a draft tube and helical screw positioned in each of the stages. A method for crystallization includes supplying process material to be crystallized into a vessel, moving the process material through a central portion of the vessel, circulating a portion of the material through an annular space in the vessel, and discharging a portion of the material through an outlet.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 61 / 766,994, filed February 20, 2013, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] Apparatus and methods for crystallization are provided. More specifically, apparatus and methods for efficiently mixing and cooling massecuite are provided. Background technique [0004] Crystallization of a solid from a solution occurs in a supersaturated material solution of a substance such as sucrose. Maintenance of supersaturation can be achieved by (i) evaporative removal of the solvent or (ii) cooling of the solution. While the first is standard practice in the sugar industry, there are several advantages to the general application of cooling crystallization. Supersaturated sugar solutions are viscous, and effective cold crystallization depends both on good heat transfer of the massecuite (mixture of crystals and mother liquor) as ...
