Embodiment Construction

[0014] see first figure 1 , shows a flow sensor 1 positioned in the airflow 2 and providing an output to a device of use 3 such as a display or control unit. Airflow 2 may be within respiratory airflow tube 120 . The flow sensor 1 comprises a rigid but flexible elongate planar substrate 10 such as polycarbonate, and a piezoelectric member in the form of a membrane element 11 bonded or otherwise attached to the upper surface of the substrate. The piezoelectric membrane 11 is rectangular and slightly smaller than the substrate 10, and the membrane is relatively thin so that it is more flexible than the substrate. The membrane 11 has two terminals 12 and 13 at one edge 14 through which electrical signals are supplied to and from the piezoelectric element. The base 10 is mounted at one end 15 with a support in the form of a processing unit 20 so that the length of the base extends away from the processing unit and its opposite end 16 is free and unsupported. The free end 16 has...

Abstract

A gas flow sensor (1), such as for a breathing tube (120) or a convective heating blanket (40), comprises a rigid yet flexible rectangular substrate (10) supporting a piezoelectric element (11). The substrate (10) is mounted at its downstream end (15) and is aligned in the air flow (2) so that its free end (16) vibrates upwards and downwards through the air flow. This bends the substrate (10) and piezoelectric element (11) so that it provides an output to a processor (20) that alternates in amplitude depending on the airflow rate. The processor (20) provides an output indicative of the airflow rate to the display (3).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to flow sensors and devices comprising flow sensors. [0002] The invention relates more particularly to gas flow sensors, especially but not exclusively for medical applications. Background technique [0003] There are many different forms of flow sensors, such as hot wire anemometers, where increased airflow through the sensor produces an increased cooling effect on the wire, rotating a vane arrangement placed in the airflow so that the vane arrangement passes through the The flowing gas is rotated at a certain rate; and the bending means are placed normal to the flow so that they deflect to some degree depending on the pressure exerted by the flowing gas. Examples of the aforementioned flow sensors are described, for example, in US7337678, US4989456, KR201220135663 and US2012318383. There are many applications in the medical device industry where low cost air flow measurement devices are available eg for control, moni...
