Abstract

A method of insulating a building that includes one or more existing external walls 2 and an existing roof structure 4 supported by the walls, comprises constructing a first external shell structure 24a that covers an outer surface of at least one external wall, said shell structure being spaced from the outer surface of the wall to provide a wall void 28 between the external wall and the shell structure. A second shell structure 24b is constructed that extends around or through (fig.15) the existing roof structure 4 and provides an enclosed roof void 26b that extends around or through the roof structure. The roof void 26b is interconnected with the wall void 26a. The wall void 26a and the roof void 26b are filled with an insulating material to provide a continuous insulating layer 28 extending through the wall and roof voids to eliminate thermal breaks between them. A vapour resistant membrane is preferably included between the external wall and the wall void and below the roof void.
