Embodiment Construction

[0022] In one general aspect, a device includes a uniform composite material including a plurality of conductive nanoparticles disposed within an elastic polymer foam. A homogeneous composite can generate an electrical voltage in response to deformation. The apparatus can also include at least one probe disposed within the homogeneous composite material and a voltage detector coupled to the probe. The device can be used as a strain gauge. The device may include one or more of the following features. For example, the plurality of conductive nanoparticles can be a primary conductive filler, and the homogeneous composite can further include a secondary conductive filler. In some implementations, the elastomeric polymer foam is a polyurethane foam base. In some embodiments, the homogeneous composite material further includes fibers coated with a conductive substance, eg, carbon fibers coated with nickel. In some implementations, the plurality of conductive nanoparticles includ...

Abstract

In one general aspect, a device includes a material comprising a non-lamellar mixture comprising an elastic polymer having a plurality of voids; and a plurality of conductive fillers disposed within the elastic polymer. The device can produce an electrical response corresponding to deformation, and thus, acts as a strain gauge. The conductive filler may include conductive nanoparticles and / or a conductive stabilizer. In another general aspect, a method of measuring compressive strain includes detecting an electrical response along a first axis in response to an impact to a homogeneous composite material comprising conductive fillers and voids disposed throughout an elastomeric polymer, and based on the electrical The response determines the deformation of the impact. The impact may be along a second axis different from the first axis.
