Problems solved by technology

However, there is a problem with transparent display devices using LCD technology that their transparency is deteriorated by the polarizing plates used to achieve black
In addition, LCD-based transparent display devices also have problems with outdoor visibility
[0008] OLED-based transparent display devices have higher power consumption than LCD-based transparent display devices, and have difficulty displaying pure black
In addition, although OLED-based transparent display devices have no problem with contrast in dark environments, they suffer from contrast deterioration in general lighting environments

Embodiment approach

[0078] A liquid crystal layer of a light control device using a guest-host liquid crystal layer for a transparent display device was investigated. In this case, the guest means the dichroic dye added to the liquid crystal, and the host means the liquid crystal. In the guest-host mode, the alignment direction of the liquid crystal is controlled by an electric field generated by an applied voltage, while aligning the dichroic dye in the same direction as the liquid crystal. Accordingly, incident light is scattered and absorbed by the liquid crystal and the dichroic dye, thereby realizing a light-shielding mode. If a voltage is applied, the liquid crystal and dichroic dye align perpendicular to the substrate, and all incident light passes through the guest-host liquid crystal, enabling a transparent (or transmissive) mode.

[0079] At this time, liquid crystals used as hosts can be classified into nematic liquid crystals, smectic liquid crystals, and cholesteric liquid crystals....

Abstract

The invention discloses a light controlling apparatus and a transparent display including the same. The light controlling apparatus includes a first electrode on a first substrate; a first alignment film on the first electrode; a second electrode on a second substrate facing the first substrate; a second alignment film on the second electrode; and a guest-host liquid crystal layer having cholesteric liquid crystals and dichroic dyes between the first and second alignment films. The first and second electrodes provide a vertical electric field, and at least one of the first and second electrodes provides a horizontal electric field. The cholesteric liquid crystals have a homeotropic state when an electric field in a first direction is applied to the guest-host liquid crystal layer to realize a transparent mode. The cholesteric liquid crystals have a focal conic state when an electric field in a second direction is applied to realize a light shielding mode. The same state of the cholesteric liquid crystals and the dichroic dyes is maintained when no electric field is applied to the guest-host liquid crystal.
