Embodiment Construction

[0025] Embodiments relate to methods and systems for extending the dynamic range of a visible image sensor. One embodiment includes a CMOS based visible image sensor incorporating dual diode pixels with different integration times to extend the dynamic range of the image sensor. Extending the dynamic range of visible image sensors is very important because sensors used on typical mobile devices may have insufficient dynamic range to capture the full dynamic range of outdoor images. In some embodiments, CMOS sensors can increase dynamic range by incorporating a dual diode design. For example, such a design could include a larger photodiode with a larger well capacity to absorb more light and provide more detail in the dark areas of the image and a smaller well capacity to provide more detail in the bright areas of the image. Detail of the smaller photodiode.

[0026] The total amount of charge that a light sensing element, such as a photodiode, can hold is called well capacit...

Abstract

The present document reveals a method for a CMOS visible image sensor, apparatus and computer program product, the CMOS visible image sensor is incorporated into a plurality of image sensing elements having different integration times for extending the dynamic range. In one aspect, it is revealed that a method of acquiring an image using a CMOS visible image sensor, the CMOS visible image sensor comprises at least one first light sensing element having a first well capacity and at least one second light sensing element having a second well capacity, wherein the second well capacity is greater than the first well capacity. The method comprises determining the first integration time for each of the at least one first light sensing element. The method further comprises determining the second integration time for each of the at least one second light sensing element, wherein the second integration time is different from the first integration time.

Description

technical field [0001] The present application relates generally to digital imaging, and more particularly to systems, methods, and devices for visible image sensors that include multiple image sensing elements for extended dynamic range. Background technique [0002] In digital imaging, the dynamic range of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensors may sometimes be insufficient to accurately represent outdoor scenes. This may be especially true in more compact sensors that may be used in mobile devices such as cameras on mobile phones. For example, a typical sensor used in a mobile device camera may have a dynamic range of approximately 6OdB to 7OdB. However, a typical natural outdoor scene can easily cover a contrast range of 100 dB between lighted areas and shadows. Because this dynamic range is greater than that of typical sensors used in mobile devices, detail may be lost in images captured by the mobile device. [0003] Previous attempts to extend the d...
