Problems solved by technology

Therefore, they do not form CaF2 layers efficiently and have poor fluoride uptake on tooth enamel surfaces
Some oral care products are formulated at a slightly acidic pH, but do not maintain the pH in the oral cavity at the desired level during oral care product application

[0087] Toothpaste formulations based on silica bases were prepared by using different concentrations of 1:1 buffer solutions prepared from acids and their sodium / potassium salts. Acid / salt mixtures are used at a total buffer concentration level of 0.5%-2.00% in the final formulation. The resulting toothpaste met all stability criteria after accelerated aging at 40°C for 6 months.

[0088]Pastes were subjected to Enamel Fluoride Uptake (EFU) testing according to FDA Method #40. This method measures the uptake of fluoride into caries-like surface lesions caused by in vitro treatment of tooth samples with toothpaste slurries. The buffered formulations were compared to toothpastes of the same formulation without buffering substances. Table 1 is the formulation tested. The results are summarized in Table 2.

Abstract

Described herein is an oral care composition comprising an orally acceptable vehicle, a fluoride ion and a buffer having a pKa of less than 7.0 wherein the pH of the oral composition is greater than 3.5 and less than 5.0, and wherein the oral composition has an acid number greater than 4.5.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to oral care compositions comprising a source of fluoride ions and a buffering agent. The present invention also relates to methods of providing fluoride to the oral cavity of a mammal. The invention further relates to methods of treating or preventing diseases or conditions of the oral cavity of a mammal. The present invention further relates to the use of buffering agents for controlling the pH of oral care compositions comprising fluoride. Background of the invention [0002] It is generally accepted that the anticaries efficacy of fluoride is related to that of CaF on the enamel surface 2 The preformation of the deposition (ideally in the form of layers) is related (Rölla G., ACTAODONTOLSCAND 46 (1988)). For CaF 2 For the efficient formation of , the conditions need to be slightly acidic, because at neutral pH conditions, calcium phosphate is more 2 Easier to form even though little phosphate is available in s...
