Embodiment Construction

[0022] The following exemplary embodiments are described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in the context of fibroid treatment and in particular removal of pedunculated fibroids. However, the disclosed electrosurgical devices are not limited to use in the removal of pedunculated fibroids. The device is suitable for removal of various pedunculated tissue structures such as, for example, polyps located in, for example, the gastrointestinal tract. Thus, although the following description focuses primarily on the removal of pedunculated fibroids, other pedunculated tissue structures can be removed by the disclosed device.

[0023] figure 1 Different anatomical locations of uterine fibroids that may afflict patients are illustrated. Submucosal fibroids 40 are located on the inner wall of the uterus 10 . Subserosal fibroids 20 are located on the lateral wall of the uterus 10 . Intramural fibroids 50 are located in wall 14 of uterus 10 . A pedunculated fibroid 30...

Abstract

An electrosurgical device (100) that can be used to remove pedunculated tissue structures, such as polyps and certain uterine fibroids, includes bipolar surface electrodes (122, 124) and a bipolar snare ( 110). The device includes: a probe (130) having a proximal end (134) and a distal end (132); bipolar surface electrodes (122, 124) adjacent to the distal end of the probe; and a bipolar snare (110 ) extending distally from the distal end of the stylet and including first and second snare electrodes (112, 114). Bipolar surface electrodes (122, 124) are spaced apart from each other by a gap and extend over a portion of the distal end of the probe. Providing both a bipolar snare and a bipolar surface electrode advantageously reduces the occurrence of thermal spread when using the snare to ablate tissue (compared to the use of a monopolar snare). Bipolar surface electrodes can be used for coagulation ablation sites.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to systems for removing tissue from a patient, and in particular for removing pedunculated tissue structures, such as polyps and pedunculated fibroids. Background technique [0002] Uterine fibroids are the most common pelvic tumors in women, affecting approximately one in four women of reproductive age. Uterine fibroids are usually noncancerous but may cause infertility or adverse effects if they occur during pregnancy. Typical symptoms include abnormal bleeding, pressure, or pain. [0003] Uterine fibroids are classified based on the location of the uterus. Submucosal fibroids form on the inner wall of the uterus; subserosal fibroids form on the outer wall of the uterus; intramural fibroids form within the uterine wall; and pedunculated fibroids are attached to the inside or outside of the uterus by a pedicle wall. [0004] Current treatment for uterine fibroids includes both drugs and surgical techniques. Medicati...
