Abstract

The present invention describes a multifunctional hydrotreater comprising: a particle removal zone having a particle trap for removing particulate contaminants from a coal tar stream; and a demetallisation zone comprising a demetallisation catalyst for removing particulate contaminants from a coal tar stream The degranulated stream removes organically bound metals.
