The reference aligning method for machine manufacturing comprises the following steps: forming a reference in or on an exposure sensitive layer on a workpiece by using a dry method; measuring and recording the positional information of the reference in a first coordinate system used by a writing system so as to apply first exposure to the workpiece; searching for a reference line of a pattern retarder and allowing the reference line to be a predetermined distance away from one of a plurality of nominal patterns formed at the upper end and lower end of the pattern retarder; aligning the reference line of the pattern retarder with the positional information of a display board in the first coordinate system; and when the reference line of the pattern retarder is aligned with the first positional information and second positional information of the display board in an allowable alignment error range, attaching the pattern retarder to the display board.
