[0093] Example 1. Preparation of a nematic curvilinear alignment phase (NCAP) liquid crystal layer
[0094] 2 grams of nematic liquid crystal (MLC-2156 from EMD Chemical Co.) was mixed with 1 gram of octane to form a clear solution. This was made by 2.5 grams of Neorez R-967 (from DSM) and a mixture of 1.5 grams of water, 0.16 grams of Surfynol DF-62 (from Air Products), 0.04 grams of TWEEN 60 and 0.06 grams of FSN (from DuPont). The LC / organic solvent mixture is emulsified to form an emulsion. Subsequently, this emulsion was coated on an ITO Mylar film and laminated with another ITO Mylar film after allowing the water and octane to evaporate completely. For comparison, Sample 2 was made by the same procedure as above but without the use of octane. Also, Sample 1 was fabricated by the same procedure as Sample 2 but using a liquid crystal having a lower optical anisotropy.
