Problems solved by technology

However, known joint designs for joining blade segments together typically suffer from various disadvantages
For example, many known joint designs do not allow adequate alignment of the blade segments
Thus, a lot of time is wasted aligning the blade segments in order to assemble the rotor blades
Additionally, many known joint designs include various complex interconnecting components, thereby increasing the amount of time required to assemble blade segments

Abstract

The present disclosure is directed to a modular rotor blade (16) for a wind turbine (10) and methods of assembling same. The rotor blade (16) includes a blade root section (20), a blade tip section (22), at least one leading edge segment (24) having a forward pressure side surface (28) and a forward suction side surface (30), and at least one trailing edge segment (26) having an aft pressure side surface (32) and an aft suction side surface (34). Further, the leading edge segment (24) and the trailing edge segment (26) are arranged between the blade root section (20) and the blade tip section (22) in a generally span-wise direction. In addition, the leading edge segment (24) and the trailing edge segment (26) are joined at a pressure side seam (36) and a suction side seam (38).

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to wind turbine rotor blades, and more particularly to modular wind turbine rotor blades and methods of assembly thereof. Background technique [0002] Wind power is considered to be one of the cleanest and most environmentally friendly energy sources available, and wind turbines are receiving increasing attention in this regard. A modern wind turbine typically includes a tower, a generator, a gearbox, a nacelle and a rotor with a rotatable hub having one or more rotor blades. The rotor blades use known airfoil principles to capture the kinetic energy of the wind. The rotor blades transfer kinetic energy in the form of rotational energy to turn a shaft that couples the rotor blades to a gearbox or, if a gearbox is not used, directly to a generator. The generator then converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy, which can be deployed to the grid. [0003] A rotor blade generally includes a suction si...
