Abstract

The invention relates to a torque converter having variable pitch stator and a bypass clutch. A transmission includes a torque converter stator with controllable blade angle. A controller adjusts the blades by commanding fluid pressures in hydraulic circuits routed to the stator hub. The controller also adjust the torque capacity of a torque converter bypass clutch by commanding fluid pressures in hydraulic circuits routed to apply and release chambers. Various schemes are presented to multiplex hydraulic circuits to serve multiple functions.

Description

[0001] This application is a continuation-in-part of US Application Serial No. 14 / 457,265, filed August 12, 2014, the entire disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0002] This disclosure relates to the field of automotive transmissions. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to torque converters having variable pitch stators. Background technique [0003] Many vehicles are used over a wide range of vehicle speeds, including both forward and reverse motion. However, some types of engines can only operate efficiently within a narrow speed range. Therefore, transmissions that are capable of efficiently transmitting power at various gear ratios are typically employed. When the vehicle is at low speeds, the transmission typically operates at a high gear ratio, multiplying the engine torque for better acceleration. At high vehicle speeds, operating the transmission at low gear ratios allows for engine speeds associated with quiet, ...
