Method of use of monomeric insulin as a means for improving the reproducibility of inhaled insulin

The need for the delivery of insulin by injection can be reduced or eliminated by delivering an aerosolized monomeric insulin formulation. Repeatability of dosing and more particularly the repeatability of the blood concentration versus time profile is improved relative to regular insulin. The blood concentration versus time profile is substantially unaffected by specific aspects of the patient's breathing maneuver at delivery. Further, the rate at which blood glucose is lowered is increased by the use of monomeric insulin. Particles of insulin and in particular monomeric insulin delivered to the surface of lung tissue will be absorbed into the circulatory system. The monomeric insulin may be a dry powder but is preferably in a liquid formulation delivered to the patient from a hand-held, self-contained device which automatically releases an aerosolized burst of formulation. The device includes a sensor which is preferably electronic which measures inspiratory flow and volume which measurement can be used to control the point of drug release.

Internal components of power generation machines, such as gas or steam turbines, are inspected with a laser profilometer inspection system that is inserted and positioned within the turbine, for example through an inspection port that is in communication with an open inter-row spacing volume between an opposing turbine vane and turbine blade row. Component surface profile scans are performed to determine relative profile heights along a two-dimensional scan line generated by the profilometer. Three-dimensional profile information is obtained by translating the scan line across the surface. Real time profile information is gathered without physical contact, which is helpful for extracting off-line engineering information about component surface conditions, including surface spallation, perforation, and gaps between components. The system is capable of determining blade tip gap between a turbine blade tip and its opposing abradable surface in the turbine casing.

Non-contact acousto-thermal method and apparatus for detecting incipient damage in materials

A non-contact acousto-thermal method and apparatus are provided for detection of incipient damage in materials. The apparatus utilizes an ultrasonic horn which receives an acoustic wave generated by an ultrasonic transducer energized by an RF pulse. The ultrasonic horn is placed at a distance from the sample to be tested with sufficient gap so that when excited, the face of the ultrasonic horn does not come into contact with the sample. An IR camera is placed at a distance from the opposite side of the sample. The acoustic wave is amplified by the ultrasonic horn, and the interaction between the sample and the acoustic wave produces changes in the temperature of the sample in the region of interaction during acoustic excitation such that the temperature of the material rapidly increases. The temperature-time profile is captured by the IR camera and may be analyzed by a data acquisition unit.
